MINUTES

FLORIDIAN BOARD MEETING April 6, 2009

 

The meeting was called to order at 9:34 by President John Miller. In attendance were: Judy Berger, JoAnn Gulvezan, Cynthia Cowdrey, Helen Connelly, Ron Robinson, and Brenda McGinnis.

The March minutes were corrected and approved.

Treasurer’s Report

JoAnn reported that we have a balance of $3920.48.

Membership

We currently have 209 members.

                        Food & Friends

The next dinner will be held on April 24. There are three host couples and no more sign ups will be taken.

Ladies Lunch

The April 8 lunch will be held at the large pavilion in Gilcrist Park because the large number of attendees.  It was voted to reimburse Joyce Gleason for the rental fee. JoAnn offered to take care of that.

Meet & Greet

The April 2 Meet & Greet was moved to Jack’s because the Seminole Golf Club was closed when we arrived at 5:00. The food, service and prices were so good at Jack’s that we will hold future Meet and Greets at that establishment. Twenty members were game enough to go from one location to a spontaneous new spot.

                        Out and About

Linda has an intriguing outing called “Are There Gators in the Sewer” planned for April 24. There will be more details and a sign up sheet at the April 13 meeting.

A trip to the Ringling Museum is planned for May 15.

June will feature a merger with Dine Around for a Dinner Theater show on the 19th. It will be either Palm or the Golden Apple in Sarasota.

Dine Around

April 15, the Veranda in Ft.Myers at noon. Car pooling is encouraged.

May 13, Paglia at the Coconut Point shopping center, 5:00PM. Dinner and entertainment provided by an Italian Tenor.

Movie Time

March 25, twelve members saw the movie “Duplicity” and had dinner at Madison’s.

“Soloist” is the flick pick for April 29.

Joan Dickson will coordinate Movie Time for the summer months while Brenda is gone.

Sports and Games

Ron reported that six members rode the Rails to Trails in Venice on March 16.

Members attended several Rays games. Ten couples are going to the opening Stone Crabs game on April 9. Elaine Struck is coordinating this event.

The May event is a Beach Boys concert on May 3.

Old Business

The April 13 meeting will have a different format from the usual. A business meeting and ice cream social will be held from 7:00-8:00. At 8:00 the Charisma Chorus from Charlotte High School will give a 45 minute performance under the direction of Jaclyn Cushman. Newcomers and Seafarers will be invited to attend the concert.

The board voted to donate $100 to the Chorus and to have a basket for individual offerings.

JoAnn will supervise a 50/50 raffle and the offering basket. Judy will shop for the ice cream, cookies and bowls.

New Business

Marlene Hofer, Secretary of the PGI Civic Association spoke to board about several Promotions. The goal is to make the Civic Association more visible to the community. There will be a drive to increase membership and a push to enforce deed restrictions. Cocktail parties for new members have already been instituted. They are expected to become quarterly events.

Marlene also wants to reinstitute the “Welcome Wagon” program. Volunteers are needed for this effort. Brenda McGinnis expressed an interest in becoming involved.

She also mentioned a float in the Christmas Parade, an expansion of the Canal Christmas Lights Contest, and a Lamp Lighter Program to help people who are disabled to put up Christmas lights.

Beth Magnin, Manager of the Civic Association, spoke of the need of donations.

There will be a collection box in the lobby for non-perishable food for local food pantries. Members will be asked to bring food items to future meetings.

There is a need for volunteers to tend some of the trees on the property. Mainly feed and water them.

Loaner equipment needs to be checked and in some cases replaced.

Main Street Punta Gorda will be sponsoring Coconut Races and Games on April 11 in Laishley Park. Cynthia Cowdrey has the racing coconut that Linda and Carol decorated in 2008. Cynthia said she would try to bring our entrant, Loco Coco, to the races on Sat. The club will reimburse her for the fee if she races it.

Plans for General Meetings in 2009 have been finalized.

May 11 will be a Picnic at the Pavilion at 5:00. Golden Corral will cater the meat and members bring sides, appetizers and desserts. BYOB. Judy Berger will coordinate.

June 8, Pizza and Games.

July 13, Cookout at the Pavilion.

No August meeting.

Sept. 14, Newlywed Game, under the supervision of Mary and Jim Gienko.

Oct. 12, Taste of Floridians.

Nov. 9, M.A.S.H. party, under the supervision of Mike Hirsh.

Dec. 14, Christmas Dinner Dance.

Board Meeting time remains at 9:30 on the first Monday of the month.

An Appreciation Luncheon for Board Members and Active Volunteers is planned for April 20 at the Civic Center.  Active volunteers are the Golfing coordinators, Book Club coordinators, and Canal Lighting Contest coordinator. John will send out a list and ask board members to screen it for any omissions. Brenda offered to procure the sandwich meat, rolls, and salads at Sam’s. Ron has been delegated to select the dessert.
