MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Well we got the year off to a great start! The road rally proved to be a fun event. Every one participating enjoyed it, especially the winners, Roger and Margy Will, and Lou and Darrel Swanfeld. We already have members volunteering to do another one! Thanks to Judy Berger for all her hard work putting it together and running the event. Our new member reception was well attended and as usual the food, drink and fellowship were the greatest. For those new members who couldn’t make it please come to the next meeting so we can greet you formally. So thank you, Floridian members for making the January meeting such a great success. We look forward to seeing you next month. To our friends who haven’t paid your dues for 2012 I extend a special invitation to be at the next meeting. Monthly meetings take place at the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association the second Monday of each month at 7 pm. Check the calendar for information on the General Membership meeting event for the month.

RAYS BASEBALL TICKETS - Hello baseball fans. Now that football season is almost over, we can turn our attention to baseball. The Rays played an exciting end of the season games but sadly, it wasn't quite enough to make up for the slow start. But that was last year. As usual, I have 8 games available for this Spring. The tickets are $ 19.00 each for the same great seats we have enjoyed over the years, along the first base side in the shade. The tickets are for Sunday March 4 Minn., Monday March 5 Baltimore, Tuesday March 6 Minn., Sunday March 11 Pittsburgh, Monday March 12 Minn., Wednesday March 14 Miami, Wednesday March 28 Pittsburgh and Monday April 2 Minn.

DINE AROUND - Heron's Creek Golf and Country Club, 5201 Heron Creek Blvd. off Sumpter Blvd., North Port on Wednesday January 18th. Cocktails at 5:00pm. The Twilight Menu is $16.95. We will be offered three entrees, 3 courses each. That menu will be forthcoming in another e-mail at which time you will select your choice of a dinner item so that we can pre-order. This method worked very well for the staff the last time we were there. This will be their Twilight Dining menu, offered to their members and outside guests for $16.95. At our previous visit, the food and service was excellent and of course, the company is always great !!! To make reservations, contact Jeanne and John Kapps at jrkapps@embarqmail.com or 941-575-9966. They will be back in Florida on January 11th and reservations can be phoned after that date. DIRECTIONS: Take U.S. 4l north to intersection of 4l and Sumpter Blvd. On right hand side of that intersection is a large sign for SABAL TRACE GOLF COURSE. Turn right at this intersection onto Sumpter Blvd. past Sabal Trace Golf Course to the sign for Heron's Creek Golf and Country Club. Turn left. Identify yourself to the attendant that you are attending the Floridian (Dine Around) function. Continue on a short distance to the club house.

OUT AND ABOUT - Jewels on the Bay Sarasota decorator Show Houses on Thurs. Jan. 26th. Payment must be made by Jan. 18th. The Group Rate Tickets are $15.00, Full Price is $20.00. Meet at 9:00am at the Civic Association to Car Pool. This year we will be visiting two historic homes in the Baypoint District of Sarasota that was developed in the early 1900s. There is a movement on to restore these historic treasures that are stunning examples of the bungalow and ranch styles of architecture. Naturally, the Professional Decorators will present the interior of the homes in the highest current styles. The homes are within walking distance. Reservations will be made at the historic Columbian Restaurant, 141 St. Armand Circle for 12:00 noon. You should make out your check to Judy Denham and get it to her by Jan.18th. You may pay at the meeting Mon. night, Jan.9, or mail your check to 499 Capri Isles Court. It is suggested that passengers should contribute $5.00 to the driver to help out with gas.

MOVIETIME - There are varied choices for this month's Movietime on Wednesday, January 25th. We will begin gathering as a group at the Regal Cinema box office in the Town Center Mall at 3:50 p.m.

The three choices are: Red Tails (beginning at 4:05 p.m.); Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (4:10); and Joyful Noise (4:30). We'll be dining at La Fontana, across the theater parking lot on the southern edge of the mall, at 6:30 p.m. (Some of us have seen coupons for dinner there.) Please call Dave and Joyce Gleason at 637-5921 no later than Tuesday night to sign up. Indicate which movie you wish to attend and/or if you plan to join us for dinner.

JERSEY BOYS - Barbara Mann Performing Arts Hall in Ft. Myers. Thurs. Feb. 2nd at 7:30. This is closed. The last day to purchase group tickets was Wed. Nov. 16th. Cost is $69.20 (special group rate). Best Musical! 2006 Tony Award Winner. The story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. This is a special group rate. If we act quickly we can have the front seats in the balcony. FLORIDA REP FT MYERS - BEDROOM FARCE on Sat. Feb. 4th at 2:00pm. Cost is $19.00 and the Deadline is Jan. 21st. This is a wickedly funny comedy from England's favorite playwright, Alan Ayckbourn. Sometimes marital discord can be fun, as long as it's someone else's. The set features three bedrooms and our imaginations can fill in the rest. MEET AND GREET - Sheraton Four Points on Thursday Feb. 9th. from 5:00 - 6:00PM. The Sheraton features two for one drinks and a spacious area for us to comfortably chat with each other. There is a limited dinner menu and you are asked to make reservations if you intend to dine at the Sheraton. LUNCHEON AND PERFORMANCE at Twin Isles Country Club - CLEOPATRA: A LIFE, enacted by Barbara Rinella on March 16th at 10:30 am. Cost is $30.00 for Members of Punta Gorda Library Friends and $35.00 for non members. There are only three tables left for this sure to be sell out event. They will hold one table for us for a couple of days, so if you would like to attend with fellow Floridians let me know right away.
